The Most Beautiful Waterfalls & Wild Swimming Spots of the North

Did you know this region is blessed with an abundance of wild, natural swimming spots — some with cascading waterfalls? The region often called the Green North isn’t called so for nothing. Compared to much of Portugal, it holds far more water — surprisingly even high up in the mountains. In summer the flow may be gentler than in winter, but there’s always more than enough to enjoy those beautiful wild waters in every season.

Many of these hidden gems you would never find on your own. And yet, how wonderful it is to privately enjoy such a little paradise. That’s why we’ve mapped out the absolute best waterfalls, mountain lakes, praias fluviais (river-beaches), rivers, granite basins and mountain streams within a 4–40 km radius of Eco Lodge Cabreira especially for you. You’ll receive the handy map link once you’ve booked your stay.

Natural Warm Water Springs

The natural hot springs – just over the Spanish border with national park Peneda de Geres- are our golden tip for those colder or rainy days. If you prefer comfort and convenience, you can visit one of the region’s spa-hotels. But if you’d rather enjoy them freely (and for free!) in the open air, we also know of several wild thermal-bath spots just beyond the Spanish border — including a stunning 1.5-hour scenic route through the Peneda‑Gerês National Park/Xurés nature reserve.
At Eco Lodge Cabreira, you can choose the DIY Hot Springs Excursion Pack when you reserve your stay. It includes:
•A mapped route with scenic stops along the way
•A parasol or umbrella for shade
•A well-stocked cool box
•All the picnic essentials you’ll want for the outdoor adventure

River Beaches, Reservoirs & Mountain Lakes

There are so many places to swim and splash in the North — and we’re not even talking about the wild ocean. Some of the spots are idyllic, private and more adventurous to reach; others are managed by local municipalities and offer easier access, parking, lawn areas, barbecues, picnic tables and even a summer-bar. Each one features clear, natural water. We’ve pinpointed these lovely places for you too, complete with exact location details.

Wherever you go, the waters are clean and naturally refreshing. Eco Lodge Cabreira provides guests with a list and map of these locations for those wishing to include them in their stay.

Water Sports: Canyoning, Teleski, SUP, Canoe, Rafting

Want more than just paddling and splashing? Then canyoning is an absolute must! Visit those same magical places — but this time follow the gorge, climbing, jumping, swimming and abseiling. We’ve been working for years with experienced, friendly, English-speaking guides you can trust.

In the region you can also try stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), teleskiing, or canoeing on the River Tâmega. Rafting is reserved for winter and spring when the river runs high — and it requires a little more experience.
